Paterno suffered a tibial plateau fracture of his left leg and ligament damage in the knee after a sideline collision with two players during the team's 13-3 loss to Wisconsin last week.
Paterno was in communication with the coaching staff for several days this week in preparation for the Nittany Lions game with Temple on Saturday.
This will be just the third game Paterno will miss in his 57 years at Penn State and just his second as the school's head football coach. Paterno missed a 1955 game at Army when he was an assistant coach due to the death of his father.
Then as a head coach, Paterno did not attend a 1977 game against Syracuse because his son David was involved in a serious trampoline accident the day before the game.
Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley and offensive coordinator Galen Hall were informed to talk out any in-game decisions that may arise, with Bradley holding the final say if an agreement can't be reached because, "he's been around the longest," Paterno said.
After Temple, the Nittany Lions have just one regular season game remaining, a November 18th tilt against Michigan State. Paterno's status for that game will be determined next week.
Paterno is 360-121-3 in his 41 years as the Nittany Lions head football coach.
